It would be really nice to trigger notifications from directly in a javascript step (not through setting up another action step and triggering that) but straight from JS. I would be fine setting up another action for a notification; however, it appears you cannot control the notification type through a variable so I would have to step up one action for each type I want to use. I can do that but it seems a bit cringey.
